We have all heard the phrase “separation of church and state.” The short definition of the phrase is that a political entity, like a state government, cannot favor or advance a particular religious view. More to the point, state action cannot advance Catholicism to the detriment of other religions, for example. But that does not mean that a state government cannot use religious morals and ethics when making a decision. In fact, our western culture is derived from the Judeo-Christian heritage and all state decisions are usually based on that Christian ethic. Compare Muslim countries who use Islam as a basis for their political decisions and communist nations who use atheism. Politics and religion are really joined at the hip, like it or not. The United States Supreme Court invented this phrase and has since applied it to extremes. The First Amendment to the Constitution states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” In other words congress cannot pass a law that promotes Scientology and prohibits Calvinism. But the extreme position of the courts today even allows devil worship as a religion. And the courts are forced to recognize other religions, like Islam, that did not exist when the first amendment was drafted. (Muslims did exist but Islam was not practiced in the United States.)The broadening of the First amendment right has created the political divide of identity politics in our country, to everyone’s detriment. For example, the Left picks up and runs with other people’s causes, like the existence of slavery, treatment of Indians, illegal immigration and the shunning of homosexuality, and acts as if the Left cares for those who were or are mistreated when, in fact, the Left only uses others' plight to elevate the Left’s "fake" righteousness and pretend that the Right is the cause of the injustice. The Right care just as much. (Notice these Judeo-Christian terms.) Can you see how the usurpation and misapplication of Christian moral and ethical values has created the political divide in this country?
